How To Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone

The comfort zone. That cozy little place where we feel nothing can touch us and everything feels in place and normal.

Have you ever attempted to step out of that zone?

It feels uncomfortable and out of place.

Where you just want to run back to the safe space.

Of course, there is nothing wrong with being in a comfort zone.

But if you are working on your personal growth or going after your goals and dreams,

Stepping out of the zone will be an important part of the process.

One of the very first times that I stepped out of my comfort zone was when I signed up to take an Aerial class.

I was not one to go after any hobbies because of the fear of failure and being too hard on myself.

So initially, my comfort zone with hobbies was having certainty and doing things I already knew how to.

I got tired of letting fear stop me from going after my dreams and goals, so I decided to do something about it.

I took the Aerial class and pushed past what I was used to.

Coming out of that first class felt so accomplishing and I wanted to continue doing it!

That is what getting out of your comfort zone can feel like for you too.

So let’s get into how you can get out of yours.

What is a comfort zone

As defined by the Oxford Dictionary, the comfort zone is a place or situation where one feels safe or at ease and without stress.

Essentially your haven.

Everyone’s comfort zone is different of course.

How to recognize what yours is

This is, as mentioned, where you feel at ease.

To spot it, it’s the capacity of what you feel okay/comfortable doing.

For example, in a workout, it would be the level of exercise you do, Beginner, intermediate, Intense.

Or if you start to travel it’s the first places you would feel best to start traveling to (usually within the country)

Whatever it is, you’ll know exactly what it is as soon as you start feeling uncomfortable.

Whenever you’re pushing past your comfort zone, there are some things to recognize.

If you are forcing it to where it’s not aligning with who you are or want to become, then that’s not the uncomfortable we are talking about.

Moving past your comfort point is going to be that “I know I have to do this to succeed with my goals because it’s what I want”

This is how you know that you are aligned with your goal, you are just igniting the will to move forward.

Comfort Zone Vs. Growth Zone

So if we are within our comfort, what is outside of it?

This zone is what I like to refer to as the Growth Zone.

I don’t know if it’s called that but from my own experience, growth occurs usually when you push past the comfort.

Here are a few examples of Comfort Zone Vs. Growth Zone:

  • With Exercise and Healthy eating, it could be
    • Comfort: Leaning more towards the unhealthier food & skipping workouts
    • Growth: Sticking to the workouts & eating healthier and hitting your fitness goal
  • With Travel
    • Comfort: Wishing you want to travel and never start planning
    • Growth: Knowing where you want to travel and booking it
  • With Hobbies (Depending on What It Is)
    • Comfort: Only doing your hobby every once in a while or when you feel like it
    • Growth: Doing your hobby regularly & advancing to the next level of it

Growth comes when you pass your comfort zone.

Yes, it’s going to feel uncomfortable. It’s going to be painful at times or maybe even frustrating.

But by going through that you are getting better and going towards your goals and dreams.

How To Get Out Of It

To get out of your comfort zone, the best thing to do is to take action towards whatever it is you’re trying to achieve.

It’s about the simplest way to move past it and will be different for each one.

Will you ever be completely out of It

There will always be some level of comfort with whatever you do.

But it’s not all bad.

There are different levels of it because when you are growing, you will get uncomfortable and then once it’s familiar, it becomes more comfortable.

It’s better to grow and move forward than stay in the same familiar place for a long time.

There are no physical barriers around your comfort zone.

And no one but yourself can push you past the barriers but yourself.

Whatever it is that you want to go out and accomplish I know you can do it!

Take that first step outside of what you’re used to and you’ll be glad you did!
