Goals. That magical little word that is motivating yet scary at the same time.
They seem to be the most popular topic on January 1st. And then almost forgotten by January 31st.
I’m sure just about everyone and there dog has created a goal they were so motivated to do and then given up on it shortly after.
Personally, I’ve given up on too many goals to count and just a little too embarrassed to say how many *Cough* probably 100 *Cough* .
There are a number of different reasons as too why our goals aren’t being hit, but there are a few factors as to why they aren’t being set correctly.
Of course, there is no right way of setting a goal but there are things every goal should consist of.
I’ve come up with the top 5 ways to set a goal that actually works!
These goal-setting methods were how I was able to lose over 16 pounds in a year. And a few other major accomplishments I was able to make because of it.
Top 5 Ways To Set A Goal
1. Be Specific
Saying “I want to lose 50 pounds” is not specific enough.
When you add specifics, you’re laying out in front of you like a map. This gives you steps on how to reach your goal instead of taking a shot in the dark.
2. Be Realistic
3. Find Your Motivating Factor
A goal can be motivating enough to push you forward. But what if you can add a little extra oomph to ignite the passion within?
Thinking about what is it that will motivate you to accomplish your goal, can play a huge part. Start to think about what it is that drives you. Is it to wear a bikini next Summer? Are you doing it to take your children to Disneyland? Or Is it to simply do it for yourself and push past those barriers? Whatever it is, always keep the reason why with you as your reminder to continue towards your goal.
3. Write It Out
For any plan, you need a blueprint. Writing out your goals will keep you accountable. And like any blue print make sure your goal is clear and specific.
Add what your goal is, how you are going to do it and set a date for when you want to accomplish it. i.e “By January 1st, 2020, I weigh xx by weight training and cardio exercises 5 days a week and eating a high protein and low carb diet”
3. Picture It
Having a visual of your goal in front of you is more powerful than you think. Print picture of what you want to accomplish. If your goal is to travel to a new country, print out a picture of where you want to visit and tape it to your bathroom mirror. You can also make the photos as a screensaver for your phone, tablet or computer. It will serve as a token of a reminder of what you’re are striving for.
4. Let It Be In The Present
The magic is in believing you already have what you want. When you write down your goal, write it as if you have it already. For example, instead of saying “I will get my Degree”, write it out to say “I have my degree”. Own what you want with the words
5. Read It Often
Read it once a day or if you feel up for it, read it twice a day. This will help keep you aligned and accountable to your goal. It also will serve as a reminder
Now that I’ve given you some steps to start setting a goal you can actually accomplish, it’s time to put in the action and get after your dreams! You have what it takes to go after what you want. I believe in you!
